Storyline:
Will Graham, a former FBI criminal profiler, retired after suffering a mental breakdown caused by an attack from Dr. Hannibal Lecktor, a cannibalistic serial killer he captured. Living in Florida, Graham is approached by his former superior, Jack Crawford, who seeks his help in solving a new serial killer case. Reluctantly agreeing, Graham promises his wife he will only analyze evidence and avoid physical danger. He visits the latest crime scene in Atlanta, attempting to understand the killer’s mindset. The murderer, nicknamed “The Tooth Fairy” by police, leaves distinctive bite marks on victims.
During the investigation, Graham discovers the killer’s fingerprints and encounters Freddy Lounds, a tabloid journalist. Seeking further insight, Graham visits Lecktor in his cell, asking for his opinion on the killer’s motives. After a tense exchange, Lecktor agrees to review the case file. However, he later deceitfully obtains Graham’s home address.
Graham travels to Birmingham, Alabama, to examine the first crime scene. Meanwhile, Crawford informs him of a note found among Lecktor’s belongings, revealing the Tooth Fairy’s admiration for Lecktor and interest in Graham. At the FBI Academy in Quantico, they analyze a missing section of the note and discover the killer’s plan to communicate through the personals section of Lounds’ newspaper, the National Tattler.
The FBI attempts to plant a fake advertisement but fears the killer will detect it without the correct book code. Instead, they allow the original ad to run, and Graham manipulates Lounds into publishing a false, derogatory profile of the Tooth Fairy to provoke him. Despite a failed sting operation, the Tooth Fairy kidnaps Lounds, escalating the hunt for the elusive killer.
