Description: “Malikappuram” is a 2022 Indian Malayalam-language action-adventure drama film directed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar. Starring Unni Mukundan, Deva Nandha, and Sreepath in lead roles, the movie was released in theaters on December 30, 2022, and received positive reviews from audiences. The film tells the story of Kallu, an 8-year-old girl with a deep longing to visit the Sabarimala Temple. The temple’s principal deity, Lord Ayyappa, is celibate, and women between the ages of 10 and 50 are traditionally prohibited from entering. Kallu, who is deeply devoted to Lord Ayyappa, has only a limited time to undertake the pilgrimage due to her age. The plot revolves around her and her cousin’s efforts to overcome numerous challenges to fulfill her dream, encountering unexpected help along the way.
The pilgrimage to Sabarimala Temple involves a 41-day preparatory period before the journey begins. Pilgrims, regardless of gender, prepare by wearing sacred garlands, dressing in black, going barefoot, following a vegetarian diet, and leading a life of austerity. Male pilgrims are referred to as Swamy, while female pilgrims are called Malikappuram. The term Malikappuram, derived from Malikappurathamma (meaning “Goddess of the Manor”), is a respectful title for all women undertaking the pilgrimage, inspired by one of the temple’s revered deities.
