**Storyline:**
There’s a unique appeal to modest genre films that often go unnoticed outside of October, a month when many immerse themselves in horror. “Madres,” though perhaps not intended to fit this niche, still finds its place. Part of the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series—a collection of four Amazon Originals produced by Blumhouse—this socially conscious thriller by director Ryan Zaragoza draws inspiration from classics like “Rosemary’s Baby” and the folklore of La Llorona. While it struggles to stand out in a crowded genre, it offers a decent distraction, perfect for a midnight movie marathon alongside more accomplished films with similar themes.
The film opens with a quote from Joseph Conrad: “The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness.” It then introduces Diana (Ariana Guerra), who experiences a haunting nightmare: her baby’s bassinet fills with dirt as she desperately tries to save the child. Awakening from this vision, she finds herself in a car with her husband, Beto (Tenoch Huerta), as they drive to their new home in 1970s California. Beto has taken a managerial position on a farm, and the couple settles into a fixer-upper.
From the start, it’s clear their new home has a dark history. Diana begins to uncover unsettling truths about the previous occupants, while strange occurrences—like an eyeball hanging from a tree—hint at a deeper mystery. As she experiences visions and confronts hostile locals, her pregnancy becomes entangled with the eerie events. Additionally, Diana’s inability to speak fluent Spanish, despite her heritage, isolates her further in the community, with some even labeling her as a “gringa.”
“Madres” explores themes of alienation, cultural identity, and the supernatural, blending social commentary with classic horror elements.
