The storyline follows teenager Maggie Thompson, who relocates to her mother Erica’s Ohio hometown after Erica’s husband leaves them. At her new high school, Maggie befriends Haley, Darrell, Chaz, and Andy, who quickly develops feelings for her. The group convinces Sue Ann “Ma” Ellington, a veterinary technician, to help them buy alcohol. Although Sue Ann anonymously reports their actions, they are released due to an officer’s history with Andy’s father, Ben.
Sue Ann then invites the teenagers to drink in her basement, and soon, her home becomes a popular party spot among students. However, the group grows uneasy as Sue Ann persistently pressures them to spend more time with her. One night, she drugs Maggie and steals her earrings. The next day, Maggie discovers unexplained cuts and bruises on her body and confides in Andy, expressing her fear and reluctance to return to Sue Ann’s house.
To regain the group’s trust, Sue Ann falsely claims she has pancreatic cancer. Haley notices a bracelet belonging to a friend on Sue Ann’s wrist, leading the girls to suspect she has been stealing their jewelry. They break into her house to investigate and encounter Genie, Sue Ann’s daughter, who surprises Maggie by walking—contrary to her usual use of a wheelchair at school. Maggie and Haley escape just as Sue Ann arrives home.
Ben, a former classmate of Sue Ann, confronts her at her workplace with a tracking device, questioning why his son Andy has been frequenting her house. He warns her to stay away from his son. A flashback reveals Sue Ann’s traumatic past: she was tricked into a humiliating act by a boy she believed was Ben during high school. Ben and his then-girlfriend, Mercedes, along with a young Erica, witnessed the incident.
This gripping story explores themes of trust, manipulation, and the haunting effects of past trauma.
