**Storyline:**
The film begins with the separate ambush and murder of two bookies by unseen assailants. Elsewhere, a young man is killed by a sniper. At a bus terminal, a man named Goodkat approaches another young man and recounts the story of Max and the Kansas City Shuffle. Two decades earlier, Max borrowed money from the mob to bet on a fixed horse race, but the horse died mid-race. To set an example, the mob killed Max, his wife, and their young son, Henry. Goodkat explains the “Kansas City Shuffle,” a deceptive double bluff, then tricks and kills the young man, taking the body in a truck.
In New York City, Slevin Kelevra stays in his friend Nick Fisher’s apartment. When visited by Nick’s neighbor, Lindsey, they discuss Nick’s disappearance and why his apartment was left unlocked. Lindsey suggests Nick may be missing. After she leaves, Slevin is kidnapped by two henchmen and taken to “The Boss.” Mistaking Slevin for Nick, The Boss demands he repay a large gambling debt or kill the son of his rival, “The Rabbi.” The Boss believes The Rabbi is responsible for assassinating his son and wants revenge by killing The Rabbi’s homosexual son, Yitzchok “The Fairy.”
Slevin returns to the apartment but is kidnapped again, this time by The Rabbi’s henchmen. Like The Boss, The Rabbi also mistakes Slevin for Nick and demands repayment of a gambling debt. Slevin tells The Boss he will kill The Fairy. Meanwhile, it becomes clear that Goodkat is manipulating both sides, orchestrating Nick’s debts being called in and planning to kill Slevin after The Fairy’s death, making it appear as a double suicide.
Slevin and Lindsey go out to dinner, where Slevin arranges a meeting with The Fairy. Detective Brikowski, investigating The Boss and The Rabbi, approaches Slevin.
