As a scholarship student at an elite prep school in Philadelphia, Ani survived what the film describes as the “deadliest private school shooting in U.S. history.” The story’s setting in 1999, the same year as the Columbine shooting, and its portrayal of the perpetrators are among the many controversial and tasteless decisions made by the filmmakers.
Overall, “Luckiest Girl Alive” is a film that struggles to balance its serious themes with its execution, often crossing into exploitative territory.
