Description: Sam Greenfield is the unluckiest person on Earth, a title she’s held since birth. Abandoned by her biological parents shortly after being born, she spent her childhood at the Summerland Home for Girls. Now, at 18, she’s about to age out of the program, still without finding a permanent home. But her misfortunes don’t stop there. Sam’s everyday life is filled with minor disasters: dropping sandwiches jelly-side down, getting locked in the bathroom, or having her lip-sync videos ruined by collapsing sets. Her bad luck follows her relentlessly, reminiscent of the Rube Goldberg-like chaos seen in the “Final Destination” series, though without the creative flair that makes those films entertaining.
The root of Sam’s struggles isn’t just her personal circumstances but also her role as the protagonist in the first movie produced by John Lasseter since his controversial move to Skydance Animation. Despite any moments of hope or improvement in her story, the film itself feels uninspired, like a lackluster imitation of “Monsters Inc.” Sam’s journey may lead her to appreciate the significance of having someone like her little sister Hazel in her life, but she remains trapped in a dull and unengaging narrative. The only consolation? At least there are no talking cars.
