Description: “Love Actually” is a 2003 romantic comedy film centered around Christmas, written and directed by Richard Curtis. The movie boasts an ensemble cast primarily made up of British actors, many of whom had collaborated with Curtis on earlier projects. Filmed mainly in London, the story explores various facets of love through ten interconnected narratives featuring a diverse group of characters. The plot unfolds over a five-week period leading up to Christmas, with an epilogue set one month later.
A co-production between the United Kingdom, the United States, and France, the film was released in the U.S. on November 14, 2003, and in the UK a week later. While it received mixed reviews from critics, it was a commercial success, earning $246 million globally against a budget of $40–45 million. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Over time, “Love Actually” has become a holiday favorite, often regarded as a modern Christmas classic.
One of the storylines follows Jamie (Colin Firth), a writer left heartbroken after discovering his girlfriend’s affair with his brother. Retreating to his cottage in France, he meets Aurélia (Lúcia Moniz), his Portuguese housekeeper who doesn’t speak English. Despite the language barrier, the two develop a connection. After returning to England, Jamie realizes he’s in love with her and begins learning Portuguese. He travels back to France to propose, and, in a heartfelt moment, she accepts in broken English, surrounded by a cheering crowd.
