Description: In the 2022 movie *Lou*, set in the 1980s Pacific Northwest, Allison Janney portrays the titular character, a reclusive loner living in a remote area. The film begins with Lou in a dark state of mind—she hunts a deer to assert her toughness, withdraws all her money, and writes a cryptic letter about inheriting her home. After drinking bourbon and preparing to end her life, she is interrupted by Hannah (Jurnee Smollett), a woman renting a nearby house. Hannah’s daughter, Vee (Ridley Asha Bateman), has gone missing. To make matters worse, a violent storm is approaching.
Hannah suspects her ex-husband, Phillip (Logan Marshall-Green), is behind the kidnapping. Phillip, a former special forces soldier, had faked his own death to gain access to his daughter while evading suspicion. He is not only abusive but also highly dangerous, as evidenced by his brutal killing of a hitchhiker. Phillip underestimated Lou, who teams up with Hannah to rescue Vee.
The film initially gains momentum as a survival thriller, with Lou and Hannah venturing into the storm. A standout action sequence unfolds in a cabin, showcasing Lou’s combat skills as she takes down her attackers. However, the movie loses steam with an implausible twist and a character connection that strains believability. Despite some gripping moments, *Lou* struggles to maintain its intensity.
