**Plot Summary:**
In the early 1980s, Yuri Orlov (played by Nicolas Cage), the eldest son of a Ukrainian refugee family, witnesses a Russian mobster kill two assassins armed with Kalashnikov rifles during a visit to a Brighton Beach restaurant. This incident sparks his interest in the arms trade, drawing a parallel between humanity’s constant need for weapons and its need for food. After his first successful arms deal, Yuri persuades his brother Vitaly (Jared Leto) to join him as his business partner. Together, they leave their family’s restaurant behind and venture into the lucrative world of international arms dealing.
Yuri’s big break comes during the 1982 Lebanon War, where he supplies weapons to all sides of the conflict, even as he witnesses horrific war crimes and atrocities. His growing success in the arms trade catches the attention of Interpol, particularly agent Jack Valentine (Ethan Hawke), who poses a unique threat to Yuri. Unlike others, Valentine is driven by a desire for justice rather than money, making him difficult to bribe or influence.
As Yuri’s operations expand, Vitaly succumbs to cocaine addiction after a Colombian drug lord pays for an arms deal with drugs. Yuri forces his brother into rehabilitation and continues the business alone. Meanwhile, he reconnects with his childhood crush, Ava Fontaine (Bridget Moynahan), by luring her to a fake photo shoot. The two fall in love and eventually marry.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Yuri travels to Ukraine, where he illegally purchases tanks and weapons through his uncle, a former Soviet general overseeing a surplus of military equipment. Yuri further extends his business to Africa, forming a partnership with Andre Baptiste Sr. (Eamonn Walker), a ruthless Liberian dictator engaged in a perpetual civil war.
