Description: In 2005, Taliban leader Ahmad Shah in Afghanistan was responsible for the deaths of more than twenty United States Marines, as well as villagers and refugees assisting American forces. In response, a United States Navy SEALs unit was tasked with capturing Shah through a counter-insurgency mission. A four-member SEAL reconnaissance team, comprising team leader Michael Murphy, marksman and medic Marcus Luttrell, Matthew Axelson, and communications specialist Danny Dietz, was deployed to locate Shah.
The team was sent to the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, facing communication issues as they navigated the rugged terrain. During their mission, they encountered local goat herders and, after detaining them, debated whether to release or eliminate them. Ultimately, they chose to release the herders and abandon the mission. Shortly after, Taliban forces ambushed them. Despite killing several insurgents, the SEALs were heavily outnumbered and injured, especially after leaping into a ravine to escape.
As the team retreated through the forest, Dietz lost consciousness, unintentionally revealing their position. Murphy and Axelson attempted to lead the escape, while Luttrell tried to carry Dietz, who was eventually killed by enemy fire. Murphy climbed to higher ground to call for reinforcements using a satellite phone but was fatally shot after successfully reaching his unit.
In response to Murphy’s distress call, a quick reaction force of SEALs was dispatched via Chinook helicopters. However, Taliban forces shot down one helicopter, killing all sixteen personnel onboard, including eight SEALs and eight Special Operations aviators. The second helicopter was forced to retreat, leaving Luttrell and Axelson to fend for themselves. Axelson was killed while engaging insurgents, but Luttrell managed to evade capture by hiding in a rock crevice after surviving a rocket-propelled grenade attack.
