Description: “Load Shedding,” a 2015 film directed by Soukarya Ghosal, takes viewers back to the nostalgic era of 1990s Kolkata, where even moments spent during power outages were treasured. The story centers around Atolanto, a 14-year-old Bengali boy, whose life is deeply intertwined with the frequent power cuts of Kolkata.
Atolanto’s journey is shaped by his joint family, who play a pivotal role in raising him and his sister. During these power cuts, he falls in love with Papiya, a girl who initially dislikes Kolkata due to its unreliable electricity. However, Atolanto’s charm and the city’s unique atmosphere gradually win her over, making her appreciate the beauty of what he calls the “city of joy.”
Just as their relationship blossoms, a tragic accident leaves Atolanto blind, turning the story in an unexpected direction. Papiya promises to stand by him, encouraging him to confront what she metaphorically refers to as the “load shedding” of his vision. She reminds him of his own words: “Load shedding doesn’t happen to cause suffering, but to make us realize the value of light when it returns.”
The film features a talented cast, including Riddhi Sen, Meghla Dasgupta, Bidipta Chakraborty, Aporajita Ghosh, Animesh Bhaduri, Arka Sinha, Joydeep Kundu, Amrita Mukherjee, and Barna Raha. Through its heartfelt narrative, “Load Shedding” beautifully captures the essence of 1990s Kolkata, the warmth of family bonds, and the resilience of love in the face of adversity.
