**Storyline:**
After a brief disruption at the FBI’s Cyber-Security Division, NYPD detective John McClane is tasked with bringing in a top computer hacker, Matthew Farrell (Justin Long). McClane arrives just in time to save Farrell from assassins sent by Mai Linh (Maggie Q), a member of Thomas Gabriel’s (Timothy Olyphant) team.
On their way to Washington, D.C., Farrell reveals that he created an algorithm for Linh, originally intended for ethical hacking. Meanwhile, Gabriel orchestrates a massive cyber attack, disrupting transportation grids and the stock market while issuing a threatening message to the U.S. government. Farrell identifies this as the start of a “fire sale,” a strategy to cripple the nation’s infrastructure.
As McClane and Farrell head to FBI headquarters, Linh, posing as a dispatcher, redirects their convoy into an ambush. McClane manages to fend off the attackers, destroying their helicopter in the process.
After discovering Gabriel’s next target, the power grid, McClane and Farrell travel to a utility superstation in West Virginia. They confront and eliminate Linh’s team, with Linh falling to her death during a struggle with McClane. Enraged, Gabriel attempts to kill them by diverting natural gas to the station, but the duo escapes.
Seeking further assistance, McClane and Farrell visit hacker Frederick “Warlock” Kaludis (Kevin Smith). Warlock traces the algorithm Farrell wrote to a Social Security Administration building in Woodlawn, Maryland. He also uncovers Gabriel’s background as a former Department of Defense security expert, dismissed for his unconventional methods after warning about vulnerabilities to cyberwarfare.
