Storyline: On the island of Kauaʻi in Hawaii, a young woman named Nani Pelekai works as a waitress and struggles to care for her lively younger sister, Lilo, after the death of their parents. A social worker named Cobra Bubbles expresses concern about Nani’s ability to properly raise Lilo.
Lilo faces challenges at school, as her hula classmates exclude her. To help Lilo, Nani decides to let her adopt a dog. At the animal shelter, Lilo is drawn to a small blue alien creature named Experiment 626, who is posing as a dog. Experiment 626, later named Stitch, is incredibly strong and intelligent but also causes chaos. Despite Nani’s reservations, Lilo adopts Stitch and introduces him to their island life.
Meanwhile, Dr. Jumba Jookiba, the alien scientist who created Stitch, and his partner, Agent Wendell Pleakley, attempt to capture Stitch. Their efforts lead to destruction, ultimately resulting in Nani losing her job. Cobra Bubbles warns Nani that Lilo will be placed in foster care unless she finds stable employment. However, Stitch’s mischievous behavior continues to disrupt Nani’s attempts to secure work.
Nani’s friend David Kawena invites her, Lilo, and Stitch for a day of beach activities. During a surfing session, Dr. Jumba tries to capture Stitch, accidentally causing an accident that endangers Lilo. Though they survive, Cobra witnesses the event and insists on removing Lilo from Nani’s care unless she finds a stable job.
Feeling guilty for the trouble he has caused, Stitch runs away. The Galactic Federation’s leader replaces Dr. Jumba and Pleakley with Captain Gantu to handle the situation. Meanwhile, David informs Nani about a job opportunity, giving her hope. Stitch, hiding in the woods, encounters Dr. Jumba, who chases him back to Nani’s house. A violent fight erupts, destroying the house, and Cobra arrives to take Lilo away.
