Description: “Lightyear,” a 2022 American computer-animated science fiction action-adventure film, is produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The movie serves as a spin-off from the iconic Toy Story series, offering an origin story for the beloved character Buzz Lightyear. Directed and co-written by Angus MacLane, with Galyn Susman as producer, the film features Chris Evans voicing the titular character. The supporting cast includes Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, Uzo Aduba, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.
The plot follows young astronaut Buzz Lightyear, who, after being stranded on a hostile planet with his commander and crew, embarks on a mission to find a way back home. Along the way, he faces the formidable Emperor Zurg. The character of Buzz Lightyear was initially introduced in the direct-to-video film “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins” (2000), which also served as the pilot for a spin-off TV series, “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command” (2000–2001). MacLane, a passionate science fiction fan, proposed the idea of a Buzz Lightyear film after completing work on “Finding Dory” (2016).
To capture the essence of the science fiction films he admired, MacLane aimed for a “cinematic” and “chunky” visual style. The animation and visual effects were created remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s score was composed by Michael Giacchino. “Lightyear” premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on June 8, 2022, and was released in U.S. theaters on June 17 in various formats, including RealD 3D, 4DX, Dolby Cinema, and IMAX. This marked Pixar’s first worldwide theatrical release since “Onward” in March 2020, and it was the first Pixar film shot in IMAX. Critics generally praised the animation, voice performances, score, and entertainment value but noted that the storyline was somewhat conventional and did not meet Pixar’s usual high standards.”
