Description: Fletcher Reede is a dishonest lawyer and divorced father living in Los Angeles who loves spending time with his young son, Max. They often play a game where Fletcher uses his hand as “the Claw” to tickle and chase Max. However, Fletcher prioritizes his career over his family, frequently breaking promises to Max and his ex-wife Audrey, and lying about his reasons. This habit of compulsive lying has earned him a reputation as a successful defense lawyer. When Fletcher misses Max’s birthday party to pursue a promotion by seducing his boss, Miranda, Max makes a birthday wish that his father would be unable to lie for an entire day—a wish that instantly comes true.
Fletcher soon realizes he can no longer lie, mislead, or even withhold the truth, leading to a series of awkward and inconvenient situations. This becomes particularly problematic as he handles a high-profile divorce case for Samantha Cole, a gold-digger, where his main witness, Kenneth Falk, is willing to commit perjury to win. Fletcher’s inability to lie disrupts the case, and he even objects to his own questions when he knows the answers will be false. Meanwhile, Audrey plans to move to Boston with her fiancé Jerry and take Max with her, fearing Fletcher’s broken promises will continue to disappoint their son.
Desperate to delay the case, Fletcher attempts various strategies, including harming himself, but cannot lie his way into a continuance. His life spirals into chaos as he struggles to navigate a world where honesty is now his only option.
