Description: In March 1983, in Los Alamos, New Mexico, a disfigured man is hospitalized. An unnamed police detective attempts to question him about a recent murder. While the detective steps out to answer a call, the man jumps out the window, leaving a note that reads, “I’M SORRY ABBY.”
Two weeks earlier, Owen, a lonely 12-year-old boy neglected by his divorcing parents, meets a barefoot girl named Abby and an older man who move in next door. At school, Owen is relentlessly bullied by a teenager named Kenny and his friends. Owen confides in Abby, who encourages him to stand up for himself and promises to protect him. The two become close friends, communicating via Morse code through their apartment walls.
Abby’s companion, Thomas, kidnaps a local teenager to collect blood for her, but an accident causes him to spill it all. Hungry, Abby attacks a neighbor, killing him and drinking his blood. Thomas disposes of the body. Later, Thomas hides in a car but is discovered, leading to a struggle that causes the car to crash. Trapped, he disfigures his face with sulfuric acid, rendering himself unrecognizable and landing in the hospital. Abby visits him, and Thomas allows her to drink his blood before he dies.
That night, Abby visits Owen and insists he invite her in. She stays overnight, agreeing to be his girlfriend. The next day, Owen’s class goes ice skating on a river. When the bullies corner Owen, he fights back, striking Kenny with a metal pole and injuring him. Simultaneously, the students discover the neighbor’s body frozen in the ice.
