Description: In 1961 Montana, retired sheriff George Blackledge lives on a ranch with his wife Margaret, their son James, James’s wife Lorna, and their infant grandson Jimmy. One day, Margaret notices James’s horse roaming alone and grows concerned. George discovers James’s lifeless body by a creek, having died from a fall that broke his neck.
By 1963, Lorna marries Donnie Weboy, though it’s clear she doesn’t love him but relies on his support to care for Jimmy. During a shopping trip, Margaret witnesses Donnie aggressively grabbing Jimmy after he drops his ice cream and striking Lorna when she intervenes. Margaret later learns the family has left town. Determined to rescue Jimmy, she convinces a reluctant George to join her.
The couple seeks help from a local sheriff, who directs them to Forsyth, Montana. There, a shop owner related to the Weboys advises them to try Gladstone, North Dakota. Along the way, they meet Peter Dragswolf, a young Native American who offers them food and shelter, suggesting they look for Bill Weboy, Donnie’s uncle.
The next day, George and Margaret meet Bill, who connects them with Donnie’s mother, Blanche. Initially polite, Blanche reveals her true nature when Lorna and Jimmy arrive, making harsh remarks and treating Lorna sternly. Later, George and Margaret take Lorna to lunch during her break from work, reaffirming their commitment to protect her and Jimmy.
