Description: In 1815, Jean Valjean, a French prisoner, is released from the Bagne of Toulon after serving a nineteen-year sentence for stealing bread to feed his nephew. His parole status hinders his ability to find work or shelter. However, he is taken in by the compassionate Bishop of Digne. When Valjean attempts to steal the bishop’s silverware and is caught by the police, the bishop claims he gifted the silver to Valjean, urging him to use it to lead an honest life. Deeply moved, Valjean breaks his parole, assumes a new identity, and dedicates himself to redeeming others.

Eight years later, Valjean has become a respected factory owner and the mayor of Montreuil, Pas-de-Calais. His life takes a turn when Javert, a former prison guard from Toulon, arrives as the new chief of police. Javert grows suspicious of Valjean after witnessing him save a worker trapped under a cart. Meanwhile, Fantine, one of Valjean’s workers, is fired when it is revealed she has an illegitimate daughter, Cosette, living with the exploitative Thénardier family. Fantine sends her earnings to them to support her child.

Desperate and ill, Fantine sells her hair, teeth, and eventually her body to provide for Cosette. She is arrested by Javert after attacking an abusive customer, but Valjean intervenes, recognizing her and taking her to the hospital. Upon learning that an innocent man has been mistaken for him, Valjean confesses his true identity in court. He returns to the dying Fantine, promising to care for Cosette. Javert attempts to arrest Valjean, but he escapes to the Thénardiers’ inn, pays Fantine’s debts, and flees with Cosette.

They find refuge in a convent, aided by the worker Valjean had previously saved. Later, Thénardier tries to rob Valjean’s home but is stopped by Éponine. Sensing Javert’s presence, Valjean plans to escape to England with Cosette. Before leaving, Cosette writes a letter to Marius, which Éponine hides from him. As Lamarque’s funeral procession unfolds, a revolt erupts in Paris, and barricades are built across the city.
