Directed by Sun Yijun, the president of animation at the Beijing Film Academy, *Legend of a Rabbit* took three years to produce, involving a team of 500 animators. The film had a budget of CNY 120 million, with 80% allocated to production equipment and the remaining 20% to marketing. Although Yijun admitted he wasn’t entirely satisfied with the final product, he believed it would bring attention to the Chinese animation industry.

Yijun expressed pride in the film’s international recognition, citing an article in *The Guardian* titled “China Picks Cartoon Fight with Hollywood.” He compared the competition with Hollywood to Liu Xiang’s participation in the 100-meter race, stating it was a proud moment for China.

The film was first unveiled in December 2010 at a conference in Beijing. A teaser was released in February 2011, followed by a seven-minute preview in June. It premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and was later shown in 3,000 theaters across China. Released in over 80 countries, it became the first Chinese animated film to achieve an international theatrical release. Tianjin North Film Studio partnered with Cartoon Network to broadcast the film in Australia, New Zealand, India, and Taiwan. Additionally, merchandise, including a toy line, was produced to accompany the film.
