Description: Will, an Iraq War veteran battling PTSD, lives with his 13-year-old daughter, Tom, in the secluded Forest Park near Portland, Oregon. They rely on survival skills and only venture into town occasionally for essentials. Will earns money by selling his VA-prescribed benzodiazepines to other veterans.
When a jogger spots Tom in the woods, park rangers arrest them, and social services intervene. Tom is found to be academically advanced despite her lack of formal schooling. They are provided a house on a Christmas tree farm in rural Oregon in exchange for Will’s work. Reluctantly, Will begins packaging trees but struggles with the noise of helicopters. Meanwhile, Tom befriends a local boy and joins the 4H youth club.
Despite social services monitoring them, Will suddenly decides to leave, and Tom follows. They return to their forest camp, only to find it destroyed. Attempting to travel, they eventually hitch a ride with a trucker who drops them in a remote forest in Washington state. Forced to build a temporary shelter, they later discover a vacant cabin and settle in.
While searching for food, Will goes missing. The next morning, Tom finds him unconscious at the bottom of a ravine with a severe foot injury. She seeks help from local quad bikers, who take them to their mobile home community. Tom insists on avoiding hospitals, and a former Army medic is called to treat Will’s injury.
