**Storyline:**
In 1955, Betty Hartman and Ted Hardesty are driving on a country road when they encounter a seemingly injured child named Jedidiah Sawyer. Betty tries to help him and follows him to a rundown barn, where she is brutally killed by his sadistic family. Her father, Sheriff Hartman, arrives at the scene and is devastated to find his daughter dead. Despite the plea of matriarch Verna Sawyer, the sheriff takes Jedidiah into custody as retribution and sends him to a mental institution called the Gorman House Youth Reformery.
Ten years later, at Gorman House, where inmates are given new names to distance them from their dangerous families, nurse Elizabeth White forms a bond with a boy named Jackson. Verna Sawyer visits the institution with a court order for family visitation but is denied by the facility’s director, Doctor Lang. As Verna leaves, she causes a security breach, triggering a riot that results in the deaths of many patients and staff. Elizabeth is saved by Jackson, but they are taken hostage by escaped inmates Ike and Clarice.
The group stops at a rest-stop diner after discarding their institutional uniforms. A confrontation with waitress Tammy escalates, and Ike and Clarice begin a murderous rampage, forcing them to flee. Sheriff Hartman investigates the diner and realizes that one of the escaped inmates is Jedidiah Sawyer. The escapees later hide in an abandoned mobile home. Elizabeth attempts to escape during the night but is stopped by Ike. The next morning, Clarice goes searching for Ike in the woods and is captured by Hartman. After taunting him about his deceased daughter, Clarice is killed by the sheriff, witnessed by the others from a distance. Terrified, Elizabeth flees with Jackson and calls for help when a police car passes by.
