**Storyline:**
In 1931, the Bondurant brothers—Forrest, Howard, and Jack—are prospering in the moonshine business in Franklin County, Virginia. They use their gas station and restaurant as a cover for their illegal operations, aided by Jack’s engineer friend, Cricket. One day, Jack observes mobster Floyd Banner killing two ATF agents in plain sight.
Back at the gas station, Forrest hires Maggie, a dancer, as a waitress. Soon after, U.S. Marshal Charley Rakes arrives with local officials, demanding a share of the profits from all bootleggers in the county. Forrest refuses and urges other bootleggers to stand against Rakes, but they do not support him.
Meanwhile, Jack becomes infatuated with Bertha, the daughter of a local preacher. He impresses her at a church service, though in a drunken state. Later, Jack interrupts Rakes during a visit to Cricket’s home, resulting in a brutal beating as a warning to the Bondurant brothers.
That same night, Forrest confronts and expels two customers who harass Maggie. After she resigns and leaves, Forrest is ambushed and nearly killed, his throat slashed. Maggie returns to find him but is attacked and assaulted by the same men, though she keeps the ordeal to herself.
While Forrest recovers in the hospital, Jack and Cricket attempt to sell their remaining moonshine outside the county. They are ambushed by Banner and his men but are spared when Jack reveals his identity as a Bondurant, earning Banner’s respect for their defiance of Rakes.
