**Storyline:**
Detective Mark McPherson of the New York City Police Department is investigating the murder of Laura Hunt, a highly successful advertising executive. She was killed by a shotgun blast to the face at the entrance of her apartment.
McPherson begins his investigation by interviewing Waldo Lydecker, a charismatic newspaper columnist who mentored Laura and helped advance her career. Lydecker, a self-important and refined man, recounts how he became her platonic companion.
Next, McPherson questions Shelby Carpenter, Laura’s fiancé and a dependent playboy who is also involved with her wealthy aunt, Ann Treadwell. Treadwell tolerates her niece’s relationship with Carpenter, as she is romantically linked to him herself and financially supports him.
The detective also speaks with Bessie Clary, Laura’s devoted housekeeper. Through interviews with Laura’s acquaintances and by reviewing her personal letters and diary, McPherson becomes increasingly fixated on her. Lydecker accuses him of developing feelings for the deceased woman and reveals his own jealousy of Laura’s suitors, whom he manipulated to keep them away.
One night, McPherson falls asleep in Laura’s apartment in front of her portrait. He is awakened by the unexpected arrival of Laura herself, who discovers a dress in her closet that belonged to her model, Diane Redfern. McPherson deduces that the victim was actually Redfern, brought to the apartment by Carpenter while Laura was away. With this revelation, the hunt for the killer intensifies.
