Description: Lars and the Real Girl (2007) is a heartfelt drama set in a small Wisconsin town. The story follows Lars Lindstrom, a reclusive young man who has lived a solitary life since childhood. His mother died during his birth, leaving his father emotionally distant. Lars’ older brother, Gus, moved away as soon as he could and only returned after their father passed away. Now, Gus lives in the family home with his pregnant wife, Karin, while Lars resides in the converted garage.
Struggling with deep-seated guilt and unresolved emotions tied to his mother’s death, Lars feels disconnected from those around him. He is painfully shy, making it difficult for him to interact with family, coworkers, or even Margo, a colleague who has a genuine interest in him.
One day, Lars introduces Gus and Karin to Bianca, a woman he met online. To their surprise, Bianca turns out to be a life-sized doll Lars purchased from an adult website. Despite this, Lars treats Bianca as a real person, believing she is a wheelchair-bound missionary of Brazilian and Danish descent. Concerned but supportive, Gus and Karin go along with Lars’ delusion, welcoming Bianca into their home and encouraging him to seek help from a doctor named Dagmar, who also works as a psychologist.
Under the guise of treating Bianca for low blood pressure, Dagmar begins therapy sessions with Lars, hoping to address his emotional struggles. The film explores themes of love, loss, and the power of community as Lars navigates his journey toward healing.
