Description: In Iceland, a herd of horses is frightened by a mysterious, loud-breathing creature that heads toward a barn. Later, farmer María and her husband Ingvar are stunned to discover that one of their pregnant sheep has given birth to a human-sheep hybrid. María grows deeply attached to the hybrid, naming it Ada after her stillborn child and treating it as her own. Ada’s biological mother begins to cause trouble, trying to reach Ada repeatedly and lingering near the couple’s home. After an incident where Ada goes missing and is later found near her mother, María shoots Ada’s mother and buries her in an unmarked grave. Unbeknownst to her, Ingvar’s brother Pétur, who arrived at the farm shortly before the killing, witnesses the event and sleeps in the barn.
Pétur, who frequently makes unwelcome advances toward María when they’re alone, is deeply disturbed by Ada and insists that “it’s an animal, not a child.” Ingvar, however, believes Ada has brought them happiness. Increasingly angered by María and Ingvar’s strange bond with Ada, Pétur takes her on an early morning walk while everyone is asleep, intending to shoot her. After a tearful change of heart, he later sleeps soundly with Ada and gradually becomes an uncle-like figure to her.
One evening, while María, Pétur, and Ingvar are having a drunken celebration, Ada sees the mysterious creature near the barn again. The creature kills the family dog and takes a gun. Later, a drunk Ingvar goes to bed, and Pétur tries to make advances toward María once more. When she refuses, Pétur reveals he saw María kill Ada’s mother and attempts to blackmail her into having sex by threatening to tell Ada the truth.
