Description: Sixteen-year-old Sarah Williams recites from a book titled *The Labyrinth* in the park with her dog Merlin but struggles to remember the last line. A barn owl watches them as Sarah realizes she’s late to babysit her infant half-brother, Toby. Rushing home, she’s confronted by her stepmother, who leaves for dinner with Sarah’s father. Sarah discovers Toby has her cherished teddy bear, Lancelot. Frustrated by both this and Toby’s constant crying, Sarah impulsively wishes that the goblins from her book would take him away. Toby vanishes, and the Goblin King Jareth appears. He offers Sarah her dreams in exchange for the baby, but she refuses, immediately regretting her wish.
Jareth reluctantly gives Sarah 13 hours to navigate his labyrinth and rescue Toby before he’s transformed into a goblin forever. Sarah meets a dwarf named Hoggle, who helps her enter the labyrinth. Initially lost, she encounters a talking worm that accidentally directs her the wrong way. Sarah ends up in an oubliette, where she reunites with Hoggle. They face Jareth, escape one of his traps, and meet a large beast named Ludo. While Hoggle flees in fear, Sarah befriends Ludo after freeing him but loses him in the forest.
Hoggle meets Jareth, who gives him an enchanted peach and instructs him to give it to Sarah, testing his loyalty. Meanwhile, Sarah is harassed by a group of creatures called The Fire Gang, but Hoggle rescues her. After she kisses him, they fall through a trapdoor into a foul-smelling swamp known as the “Bog of Eternal Stench,” where they reunite with Ludo. The trio encounters the swamp’s guardian, Sir Didymus, an anthropomorphic fox, and his sheepdog “steed” Ambrosius.
