Description: In 1987, Adele Wheeler, a depressed single mother, lives with her 13-year-old son, Henry, in a rural home. While shopping one day, a wounded man named Frank Chambers approaches Henry and convinces them to take him home to care for him. Frank is an escaped convict sought by the police. Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Frank, a Vietnam veteran, married his pregnant girlfriend, Mandy. A year after their child was born, Frank and Mandy had a heated argument where he questioned if he was the father. In a tragic turn, Frank pushed her, causing her to fall against a radiator, which led to her death. It is also suggested that their baby drowned. Frank was subsequently imprisoned for murder.
Adele confides in Frank, sharing her struggles with multiple miscarriages and the stillbirth of a baby girl after Henry. These losses left her with severe anxiety and depression, which Henry’s father later explains as the reason their marriage fell apart. Henry has tried to fulfill both the role of a son and a husband, but he realizes he cannot meet all of Adele’s emotional needs. Adele, a passionate woman who loves to dance, teaches both Henry and Frank how to dance. In return, Frank teaches Henry car repairs and other skills, as well as how to play baseball and bake a peach pie.
As time passes, Adele and Frank grow close and fall in love. They plan to escape to Canada with Henry, preparing their car and cleaning the house for their departure. Meanwhile, Henry befriends a girl named Eleanor, whom he decides to visit one last time before leaving. However, Eleanor manipulates him into believing that Adele and Frank will abandon him, leading Henry to inadvertently reveal Frank’s criminal past.
