Renowned painter Frenhofer lives a quiet life with his wife in the French countryside. His peaceful routine is disrupted when Nicolas, a young artist, visits him along with his girlfriend, Marianne. Nicolas, introduced to Frenhofer by art dealer Porbus, agrees to the idea, but Marianne feels betrayed as she was not consulted beforehand. Despite her initial anger, she returns to Frenhofer’s château the following day to begin the process.
The sessions in Frenhofer’s secluded studio are intense and exhaustive. Eventually, Frenhofer transitions to oil painting, even incorporating an unfinished piece of his wife, Liz, into the new work.
