Description: “Kurup” is a 2021 Indian Malayalam-language biographical crime thriller film inspired by the real-life story of Sukumara Kurup, one of Kerala’s most elusive criminals who has been on the run since the mid-1980s. Directed by Srinath Rajendran and written by K. S. Aravind, Jithin K. Jose, and Daniell Sayooj Nair, the film stars Dulquer Salmaan in the lead role, supported by Indrajith Sukumaran, Sobhita Dhulipala, Shine Tom Chacko, Sunny Wayne, Bharath Srinivasan, Surabhi Lakshmi, and Vijayaraghavan. The music and score are composed by Sushin Shyam.
The story revolves around Sukumara Kurup, who commits a murder to fake his own death and claim insurance money. The film, produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films and M-Star Entertainments, took six months to complete, with principal photography starting on September 1, 2019, and concluding on February 23, 2020. Filming took place in various locations, including Kerala, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Bhopal, and Dubai.
“Kurup” was released on November 12, 2021, and became the nineteenth Indian film to feature non-fungible token (NFT) collectibles. While the film received praise for its performances, storytelling, music, and climax, it faced criticism for its portrayal of the titular character. The project marked the second collaboration between Dulquer Salmaan and Srinath Rajendran after their debut film, “Second Show.” The filmmakers spent five years researching the subject to bring the story to the screen.
The film is a gripping crime thriller that delves into the life of one of Kerala’s most notorious criminals, offering audiences a mix of suspense, drama, and intrigue.
