Description: Kumbalangi Nights: A Story of Family and Relationships.
Saji, Bonny, Bobby, and Franky are four brothers living together in a crumbling house in the village of Kumbalangi. Their father married Bonny’s mother, who later gave birth to Bobby and Franky. After their father’s death, their mother left to join a religious mission, leaving Saji as the head of the household. Saji struggles with anger issues and often clashes with Bobby, who is unemployed. Franky, though ashamed of his older brothers, gets along well with Bonny, who is mute.
Bobby begins a relationship with Baby, a girl from the neighborhood, and decides to propose to her. However, Baby insists he speaks to her family first. Bobby asks Saji to accompany him to meet Baby’s brother-in-law, Shammi. Shammi rejects the proposal, mocking Bobby’s family for their poor reputation in the village. Saji comforts Bobby and encourages him to find a job, which he eventually does.
Tensions rise when Saji and Franky get into a fight, prompting Bonny to intervene and strike Saji. Overwhelmed with shame, Saji leaves the house and turns to alcohol, spending time with his friend Vijay. In a drunken state, Saji attempts to take his own life. Vijay saves him but tragically loses his own life in the process. Consumed by guilt, Saji visits Vijay’s wife, Sathi, to apologize, only to find her in labor. He rushes her to the hospital, where she gives birth to a baby girl. Saji brings Sathi and her daughter to live with him.
Meanwhile, Bonny brings home an American tourist named Nylah, who was kicked out of her hotel for inviting Bonny to stay. Franky is pleased to have both women in the house, creating a sense of normalcy within their fractured family.
Eventually, Saji approaches Shammi again, hoping to convince him to reconsider Bobby and Baby’s union, but Shammi refuses. Baby, determined to be with Bobby, decides to elope with him.
Kumbalangi Nights explores the complexities of family, relationships, and the challenges of overcoming societal judgment and personal struggles.
