The story follows Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl), a career-focused reporter in Los Angeles who has just landed an on-air role with E! She lives in her sister Debbie’s (Leslie Mann) guest house. Ben Stone (Seth Rogen), a carefree Canadian immigrant, relies on injury compensation funds and occasionally works on a celebrity porn website with his stoner roommates. While celebrating her promotion, Alison meets Ben at a nightclub. After a night of heavy drinking, they end up having unprotected sex due to a misunderstanding. The next morning, they realize they have little in common and go their separate ways.
Eight weeks later, Alison experiences morning sickness during an interview with James Franco and suspects she might be pregnant. She contacts Ben to share the news. Although initially insensitive, Ben promises to support Alison. While he is unsure about parenthood, his father is thrilled. Alison’s mother suggests an abortion, but Alison decides to keep the baby. She and Ben attempt to build a relationship, but tensions arise as Alison worries about Ben’s lack of responsibility and commitment. Her doubts are fueled by her sister’s unhappy marriage, as Debbie suspects her husband Pete (Paul Rudd) of having an affair.
The film explores their struggles and efforts to navigate an unexpected pregnancy and relationship.
