Description: Harlan Thrombey, a wealthy mystery novelist, hosts his 85th birthday party at his Massachusetts mansion with his family in attendance. The next morning, Harlan is found dead with his throat slit, and his housekeeper discovers the body. Initially ruled as a suicide by the police, private detective Benoit Blanc is hired anonymously to investigate the case further.
It emerges that Harlan’s relationships with his family were highly strained. On the day of his death, he had exposed his son-in-law Richard’s infidelity, cut off his daughter-in-law Joni’s allowance for stealing, fired his son Walt from his publishing company, and clashed with his grandson Ransom. Unbeknownst to Blanc, Harlan’s nurse, Marta Cabrera, accidentally administered a fatal morphine overdose during the party. Unable to find the antidote, Marta panicked, but Harlan, aware of her mother’s undocumented status, devised a plan to protect her. He instructed Marta to create a false alibi before ending his own life.
Marta, incapable of lying without physical distress, provides incomplete but truthful answers during Blanc’s interrogation. She assists in the investigation while concealing her own involvement. When Harlan’s will is revealed, Marta is shockingly named the sole beneficiary, sparking outrage among the Thrombeys. Ransom offers his support but manipulates Marta into confessing her part in the events. The family pressures Marta to renounce the inheritance, and Walt even threatens to expose her mother’s immigration status.
Marta later receives an anonymous blackmail note containing a partial toxicology report. She and Ransom attempt to investigate but find the medical examiner’s office destroyed. An anonymous email follows, proposing a meeting with the blackmailer, leaving Marta in a precarious position.
