Description: In 1184 France, Balian, a blacksmith, is deeply troubled by his wife’s recent suicide. A Crusader visiting the village reveals himself as Balian’s father, Baron Godfrey of Ibelin, and urges him to journey to the Holy Land. Balian initially refuses. However, after learning from the town priest, who is also his half-brother, that he ordered his wife’s body to be beheaded due to her suicide, Balian kills the priest and escapes.
Balian eventually joins his father, seeking forgiveness and redemption for himself and his wife in Jerusalem. Soldiers sent by the bishop attempt to arrest Balian, but Godfrey protects him, resulting in a fight where Godfrey is fatally wounded by an arrow.
In Messina, they encounter Guy de Lusignan, a Templar Knight and potential future king of Jerusalem. Godfrey knights Balian, names him the new Baron of Ibelin, and instructs him to serve the King of Jerusalem and protect the vulnerable. Shortly after, Godfrey dies from his injuries.
During his journey to Jerusalem, Balian’s ship is wrecked in a storm, leaving him as the sole survivor. He encounters a Muslim cavalier who attacks him over a horse, and Balian is forced to kill him. However, he spares the cavalier’s servant, earning respect among the Saracens for his mercy.
In Jerusalem, Balian becomes involved in its complex political landscape, meeting King Baldwin IV, Princess Sibylla (Guy’s wife and mother to a young boy from a previous marriage), and Tiberias, the Marshal of Jerusalem. Guy supports the Templar Knights’ brutal actions against Muslims and seeks to break the truce between King Baldwin and Sultan Saladin to provoke war.
Balian travels to his inherited estate at Ibelin, finding the land barren and its residents struggling. Using his engineering skills, he works tirelessly to irrigate the dry land, earning the trust and respect of the people.
