**Plot Summary:**
Set against the backdrop of the American financial crisis and the 2008 presidential election, *Killing Them Softly* follows Johnny “Squirrel” Amato, who devises a plan to rob a Mafia poker game. He recruits Frankie, a former associate, and Russell, a heroin-addicted Australian expatriate who steals purebred dogs for money. Their target is a game organized by Markie Trattman, who had previously orchestrated a robbery of his own poker game. Squirrel believes that Markie will be blamed again, and the Mafia will eliminate him without further investigation.
Frankie and Russell, despite their inexperience, successfully rob the game and escape with the money. The Mafia then hires hitman Jackie Cogan to handle the situation. Although Jackie suspects that Markie is innocent of this latest heist, he decides that Markie must still be killed to set an example and deter future robberies. Jackie arranges for Markie to be beaten by mobsters Steve and Barry before carrying out the hit.
Meanwhile, Russell travels to Florida to sell the stolen dogs. There, he carelessly reveals his involvement in the robbery to Kenny Gill, whom he tries to recruit as a drug dealer. Kenny informs Jackie, who deduces that Russell, Frankie, and Squirrel are the culprits. Jackie enlists another hitman, Mickey Fallon, to kill Squirrel. Jackie explains his philosophy of “killing them softly”—eliminating targets from a distance without giving them a chance to feel fear or despair—and how his personal connection to Squirrel complicates this approach.
