Storyline:
Riley, a newcomer to town, decides to try out for the cheerleading squad to make friends. As her performance improves, she notices that some cheerleaders are mysteriously expelled or injured. Suspicion arises as Riley wonders if her stepmother, Amanda, is behind these incidents to secure her place on the team.
The film centers on Riley, a high school junior who recently moved with her father and stepmother, Amanda. To fit in, she joins the cheerleading squad but faces fierce competition. When strange accidents and expulsions occur among the other cheerleaders, Riley begins to suspect her stepmother might be manipulating events to ensure her success.
Inspired by real events in Texas:
On January 31, 1991, the Houston community was shocked by the arrest of a Channelview mother, Wanda Holloway. She was accused of hiring a hitman to kill Verna Heath, the mother of her daughter’s cheerleading rival. Holloway believed that if Verna was killed, her daughter Amber would be too distraught to continue cheerleading, leaving a spot open for Holloway’s daughter, Shanna.
Holloway’s obsession with her daughter’s success reached extreme lengths. When Shanna narrowly missed making the junior high cheerleading squad, Holloway allegedly enlisted her ex-brother-in-law, Terry Harper, to arrange the murder. Unbeknownst to her, Harper reported the plan to the police, leading to her arrest the following day.
