The story revolves around Savarimuthu, a retired army officer who dedicates his life and earnings to train underprivileged yet talented women kabaddi players in his village. Muruganandham, a former student of Savarimuthu, works in the Railways under the sports quota. When Savarimuthu suffers a sudden heart attack, Muruganandham is summoned to take charge of the team.
Directed by Suseenthiran and produced by D. N. Thaisaravanan under Nallusamy Pictures, the film features M. Sasikumar, Bharathiraja, and Meenakshi Govindarajan in lead roles. The cinematography and editing were handled by R. B. Gurudev and Antony, respectively, while the music was composed by D. Imman. The film was released on 22 August 2019.
Kennedy Club follows a familiar sports film formula, with the narrative centered around women’s kabaddi. While the plot is predictable, it is the packaging of the story that keeps it engaging. The characters of the girls, who come from economically weaker backgrounds, are well-developed, and their struggles, including familial opposition to their participation in kabaddi, resonate with the audience. Sasikumar delivers a strong performance as the dedicated coach, though Bharathiraja’s portrayal occasionally feels exaggerated.
The film’s emotional depth could have been stronger, and it misses the opportunity to introduce fresh elements that would set it apart from similar sports dramas. Nonetheless, it remains a decent watch for fans of the genre.
