The story revolves around Karthik Narayan (Farhan Akhtar), a shy and insecure man stuck in a mundane job at a construction company. His life is overshadowed by a tragic childhood incident involving his elder brother, Kumar, who tormented him. One day, Kumar attempted to push Karthik into a well but accidentally fell in himself and died. Karthik has carried the guilt of this event ever since.
At work, Karthik harbors feelings for his colleague, Shonali Mukherjee (Deepika Padukone), who remains oblivious to his existence. After enduring constant ridicule from his boss, Mr. Kamath (Ram Kapoor), Karthik reaches a breaking point and decides to end his life. However, at the last moment, he receives a phone call from a stranger who claims to be Karthik himself. This mysterious caller offers guidance to transform Karthik’s life, helping him gain confidence, succeed professionally, and win Shonali’s affection.
As Karthik follows the caller’s advice, his life begins to improve significantly. However, when he shares the secret of the phone calls with Shonali and his psychiatrist, the caller becomes furious, warning Karthik that he can destroy everything he has built. True to his word, Karthik’s life starts to spiral downward, leading to a gripping psychological drama.
