Description: Kannur Squad is a 2023 Indian Malayalam-language crime thriller film directed by Roby Varghese Raj in his directorial debut. The film, written by Muhammed Shafi and Rony David Raj, stars Mammootty alongside Rony David Raj, Azees Nedumangad, Shabareesh Varma, Kishore, and Vijayaraghavan. It is produced by Mammootty under the banner of Mammootty Kampany and is inspired by the true story of the Kannur Squad, a team of police officers formed by former Kannur SP S. Sreejith IPS.
The film was announced in January 2023 under the tentative title Megastar 421, with the official title revealed by Mammootty on February 11, 2023. Principal photography commenced on December 27, 2022, and locations included various places in North Kerala and North India, such as Kannur, Kasaragod, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Pala, Pune, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Belgaum, Mangalore, and Coimbatore. The shooting concluded on April 6, 2023. The music was composed by Sushin Shyam, while cinematography and editing were managed by Muhammed Rahil and Praveen Prabhakar.
Kannur Squad premiered on September 28, 2023, receiving critical acclaim for its performances, direction, screenplay, cinematography, and musical score. It became a commercial success, grossing ₹100 crore worldwide and ranking as the sixth highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and the third highest-grossing Malayalam film of the year. The plot follows ASI George Martin and his team—Jose, Jayan, and Shafi—who are tasked with pursuing a political goon hiding in the Kannur-Virajpet forest. During their search, they unexpectedly discover the body of a stranger, initially ruled a suicide. George suspects murder and investigates further, leading to the discovery of Murugan, a lorry driver, as the victim, and identifying his wife Vanaja and nephew Rakesh as the culprits behind the crime.
