The story follows Tom Harris, a freelance undercover operative working for the CIA. His mission involves infiltrating an Iranian nuclear research facility by posing as a field technician for a Swiss communications contractor. Tom successfully implants malware, leading to the facility’s self-destruction. Concurrently, a British journalist in Iran uncovers evidence of the CIA’s sabotage of Iran’s nuclear programs. After the facility is destroyed, she is arrested by Iranian authorities, who suspect a Belgian contractor’s involvement due to its proximity to sensitive government sites.
Tom leaves Iran for London via Dubai, but his flight is delayed. During the layover, he meets his CIA handler, Roman Chalmers, who offers him a lucrative contract for a mission in Herat, Afghanistan. Tom accepts, as the payment will cover his daughter’s university expenses. Upon arrival in Herat, an intelligence leak exposes Tom as the operative behind the nuclear facility’s destruction, blowing his cover. The mission is aborted, and Roman instructs Tom and his Afghan-American translator, Mohammad “Mo” Doud, to head to an extraction point in Kandahar.
Meanwhile, Iranian and Pakistani security services learn of Tom’s location and dispatch operatives to capture him, with Pakistan aiming to ransom him to the highest bidder.
