**Storyline:**
In 16th-century India, Tara, a princess, and Maya, her servant, share a close bond as best friends. However, their relationship is tinged with jealousy and resentment, as Maya is often given Tara’s hand-me-downs and never receives anything new. As they approach marriageable age, Tara grows envious of Maya’s superior skills in classical dancing and the affection Maya receives from Tara’s parents and her hunchback brother, Prince Bikram (or “Biki”).
Tara is set to marry Prince Raj Singh, but when Raj arrives to meet his future bride, he becomes instantly infatuated with Maya instead. Angered by this, Tara humiliates Maya and sends her away from the wedding. Seeking revenge, Maya seduces Raj before he completes the marriage rites with Tara, an act witnessed by Biki in secret.
As Tara leaves home as a newlywed, Maya taunts her, implying that Tara will now inherit something she has used. During the wedding night, Tara hesitates to consummate the marriage, prompting Raj to rape her while calling her Maya. This traumatic event sets a tone of violence and humiliation for their relationship, though Tara still longs for affection from her indifferent husband.
To protect Maya’s honor, Biki proposes marriage, but when she declines, he labels her a whore, forcing her to leave her home. Wandering alone, Maya encounters Jai Kumar, a young sculptor who works for Raj. Jai reveals that Maya has been the muse behind his erotic sculptures. He introduces her to Rasa Devi, a teacher of the Kama Sutra, with whom Maya begins to learn the art of being a courtesan.
Maya and Jai develop an intense romantic and sexual relationship, but it ends abruptly when Jai fears that his obsession with Maya hinders his work. Finding solace with Rasa Devi, Maya decides to embrace the path of a courtesan, shaping her destiny in a world of passion and power.
