Description: Satya Chaudhry learns from her doctor that she has cancer and doesn’t have much time left. She returns to her hometown in Rajputana and asks her childhood friend, Roop, to accompany her husband, Dev Chaudhry, who manages a liberal newspaper. Roop agrees but only if she can marry Dev, to which Satya consents. After marrying, Dev confesses to Roop that his heart still belongs to Satya, and their relationship will remain formal and platonic. Feeling disheartened, Roop finds comfort in music, which she starts learning from Bahaar Begum, a madam at a brothel. She also begins working at her husband’s publishing house to put her education to use. While writing about the brothel’s neighborhood, Roop encounters Zafar, a charismatic blacksmith.
Zafar harbors resentment toward his parents, Bahaar Begum and Balraj Chaudhry, who abandoned him after ending their affair. Seeking revenge, Zafar aims to seduce Roop, who is married to Balraj’s legitimate son, Dev. Misinterpreting Zafar’s motives, Roop falls in love with him. Meanwhile, she begins to develop a genuine friendship with Dev, which both pleases and saddens Satya. Before passing away, Satya urges Dev to give Roop a chance and to forgive Balraj for his past actions.
In another attempt to disgrace Balraj, Zafar fuels communal division by encouraging his friend, Abdul Khan, to advocate for the partition of India based on religious lines, which Balraj and Dev oppose. When Balraj discovers Roop and Zafar’s affair, he confronts Bahaar and Zafar. Bahaar, disapproving of Zafar’s actions, warns Roop. Heartbroken, Roop decides to consummate her marriage with Dev but admits she can’t love him. As Abdul’s political influence grows, violent riots erupt against Hindus and Sikhs. The Chaudhry family decides to flee to Amritsar with Zafar’s assistance, but their maid, Saroj, is tragically stabbed to death during the chaos.
Before their escape, Zafar confesses to Roop that he genuinely fell in love with her despite his initial intentions. As they board a train, Zafar is fatally stabbed by Abdul, while Roop and Dev manage to escape.
