Description: The movie “Kala” (2021), directed by Rohith V S, tells the story of Shaji, a laid-back young man whose life takes a dramatic turn when someone from his past reappears. As Oscar Wilde’s quote in the opening suggests, the film explores the raw, primal instincts of human beings. Set in a remote wilderness, Shaji’s life revolves around farming, and his world is rarely disturbed except by relatives and daily laborers. However, when a group of workers arrives to harvest arecanut, one among them has a hidden agenda.
The film delves deep into human psychology, focusing on the clash between ego, narcissism, and determination. Shaji, portrayed by Tovino Thomas, is an egocentric character who insists on everything going his way. His opponent, played by Sumesh Moor, is a Tamilian who refuses to yield to Shaji’s dominance. The screenplay by Rohith and co-writer Yadhu Pushpakaran ensures both characters are equally compelling, creating a tension that escalates into a brutal and intense conflict in the second half.
Though the first half, which focuses on character development, feels slightly slow, the confined setting of a forest and a house adds to the film’s raw and claustrophobic atmosphere. The performances by Tovino and Moor are exceptional, with Tovino embodying Shaji’s clumsy yet stylish persona, while Moor delivers a powerful portrayal of a man willing to go to extremes to prove his point. Supporting actors Lal and Divya Pillai, who play Shaji’s father and wife, also contribute effectively to the narrative.
“Kala” is a psychological thriller that explores the darker, dormant traits of human nature, making it a gripping and thought-provoking watch.
