Storyline:
Kabir, promoted as the first Bengali film to match the standards of big-budget Bollywood productions, falls short in addressing a serious topic like terrorism effectively. The movie revolves around two individuals, Dev and Rukmini, whose paths cross amid the chaos of the Mumbai serial bombings. While the film attempts to explore the global issue of terrorism, it struggles to deliver a compelling narrative.
The plot includes twists, shocks, and surprises, but certain inconsistencies early on disrupt the flow. For instance, Yasmin travels through blast-affected areas on public transport yet remains oddly calm amidst the turmoil. Additionally, Abir is inexplicably allowed to give Yasmin a lift near a blast site, raising questions about plausibility.
Some scenes aim to mislead viewers into thinking Abir is flirting with Yasmin, much like a young man might on a train. However, his true intentions become apparent quickly, and the attempt to conceal the characters’ identities feels forced. Marketed as an action-thriller with dramatic elements, Kabir fails to thrill or deliver impactful action sequences. The one notable police-terrorist shootout feels underwhelming compared to Bollywood’s war films.
Despite its flaws, the performances of actors like Arna Mukhopadhyay and Shataf Figar stand out. Arna convincingly portrays a terrorist with limited screen time, while Shataf’s depiction is sincere. While the film doesn’t fully succeed in its ambitions, the cast’s efforts provide some redeeming moments.
