Description: Kaala 2018: A Gripping Tale of Struggle and Justice
In Mumbai, the Dharavi slum is predominantly inhabited by people who migrated from southern Tamil Nadu. Haridev “Hari Dhadha” Abhayankar, a former gangster who once terrorized Dharavi in the 1980s, now aims to evict its residents and seize their land. Over the years, Hari rises to become an MP and later a Union Minister. By 2015, Dharavi becomes a prime location in downtown Mumbai. Hari plans to clear the area to build luxury apartments through his construction company, using government schemes with the support of his ally Vishnu Bhai.
Kaala, the protector of Dharavi’s residents, stands against Hari’s plans to safeguard the community. Zareena, Kaala’s former lover, returns to Dharavi as an NGO representative, unaware of Hari’s intentions. Despite numerous attempts by Hari’s men, Kaala refuses to allow the slum’s evacuation. Kaala is arrested after his wedding anniversary celebration and brutally assaulted in the police station in front of Hari and a state minister.
After his release, Kaala faces an assassination attempt by Hari, resulting in the tragic death of his wife Selvi and son Selvam. Devastated, Kaala vows to take revenge. Hari continues to threaten Dharavi’s residents, but Kaala inspires them to protest against the government and abandon the scheme. Through social media campaigns, Kaala and his people gain momentum, leading the state government to cancel Hari’s “Clean Mumbai Initiative.”
Humiliated, Hari imposes a curfew on Dharavi with the help of SP Pankaj Patil. Together with policemen and his right-hand man, Inspector Sunil, Hari raids the area. Kaala, along with his younger son Lenin, daughter-in-law Puyal, and brother-in-law Vaaliyappan, fights back against Hari’s henchmen and the police. In the chaos, Kaala is presumed dead after his chawl is set on fire.
This powerful story highlights the resilience of Dharavi’s community and their fight for justice against oppression.
