**Storyline:**
The film unfolds in flashback, narrating the life of Suresh Sinha, a renowned film director. His marriage to Veena is strained due to her wealthy family’s disapproval of his career in filmmaking, which they deem socially inferior. Suresh is also kept away from his daughter, Pammi, who is sent to a boarding school in Dehradun.
One rainy night, Suresh encounters a woman named Shanti and lends her his coat. Later, she visits the film studio to return it, accidentally interrupting a shoot by walking in front of the camera. While reviewing the footage, Suresh recognizes her potential and casts her as Paro in *Devdas*.
Shanti quickly rises to fame, becoming a celebrated star. As two lonely souls, she and Suresh grow closer, sparking gossip that affects Pammi at school. Pammi pleads with Shanti to leave her father’s life, hoping to reunite her parents. Deeply moved, Shanti abandons her career and becomes a schoolteacher in a remote village.
Pammi chooses to live with her father, who battles his in-laws in court but loses custody to Veena, his ex-wife. The loss of his daughter and Shanti’s departure push Suresh into alcoholism, marking the start of his personal and professional decline. Meanwhile, Shanti is compelled to return to films due to her studio contract. Her producer agrees to rehire Suresh because of her, but his pride prevents him from accepting the offer.
In the end, Suresh, reminiscing about his glorious past, dies alone in the director’s chair of an empty studio, a forgotten man.
