Description: In 1988, Daniel “Danny” Maccabee (Adam Sandler), a 22-year-old man, abandons his wedding after discovering his fiancée is unfaithful and only marrying him because he was set to become a doctor. Distraught, he goes to a bar, where a beautiful woman notices his wedding ring. Danny lies, saying his wife left him for someone else, and the woman ends up spending the night with him.
Twenty-three years later, Danny, now 45, is a successful plastic surgeon in Los Angeles. He continues to use the fake unhappy marriage story to attract women and avoid emotional commitment. The only person aware of his schemes is Katherine Murphy (Jennifer Aniston), his office manager, best friend, and a divorced mother of two. At a party, Danny meets Palmer (Brooklyn Decker), a young math teacher, without his wedding ring, and they connect. However, when Palmer finds the ring the next morning, she assumes he is married and refuses to date him due to her parents’ painful divorce caused by adultery.
Instead of confessing the truth, Danny fabricates a story that he is divorcing a woman named Devlin, who cheated on him with a man named “Dolph Lundgren” (not the actor). When Palmer insists on meeting Devlin, Danny convinces Katherine to pose as his soon-to-be ex-wife. Katherine agrees and transforms into a glamorous “trophy wife” for the act.
During their meeting, Katherine gives Danny and Palmer her blessing, but Palmer overhears Katherine speaking to her children and mistakenly assumes they are also Danny’s. To keep up the charade, Danny enlists Katherine’s kids, Maggie (Bailee Madison) and Michael (Griffin Gluck), to play along, giving them the aliases “Kiki Dee” and “Bart.” The children agree, but only after securing some demands from Danny.
The story unfolds with humor and complications as Danny’s web of lies grows increasingly tangled.
