Description: In the 2080s, Earth has largely become a desolate wasteland. While some survive in the harsh “Cursed Earth,” most of humanity lives in vast Mega-Cities housing tens of millions. To fight crime, the traditional justice system has been replaced by Judges who act as police, judge, jury, and executioner.
In Mega-City One, 2139, Judge Joseph Dredd, a highly dedicated Street Judge, helps first-year Judge Barbara Hershey end a block war. Herman “Fergee” Ferguson, a recently released hacker, gets caught in the crossfire and hides in a food-dispensing robot. Dredd arrests Herman for property damage and sentences him to five years in prison. Meanwhile, Rico, a former Judge, escapes prison and returns to Mega-City One to reclaim his uniform and “Lawgiver” gun. He also reactivates a decommissioned ABC Warrior combat robot.
When Vartis Hammond, a journalist critical of Dredd, is murdered, Dredd becomes the prime suspect. He faces a trial before a council of Judges, including Chief Justice Fargo, his mentor. Dredd is convicted after his DNA is found on the bullets used to kill Hammond—a feature of the Lawgiver that imprints the user’s DNA on each bullet, a fact unknown to most Judges. To save Dredd, Fargo resigns as Chief Justice and requests the council spare Dredd’s life. Dredd is sentenced to life imprisonment, while Fargo begins the “long walk,” a tradition where retiring Judges venture into the wasteland to bring law to the lawless.
Judge Griffin, who freed Rico to frame Dredd for the murder, becomes Chief Justice and orders Rico to create chaos in the city. Dredd is transported to the Aspen penal colony by airship, seated next to Herman Ferguson.
