Determined to crack the code, Lidenbrock confines everyone in the house, insisting they go without food until the mystery is solved. Axel eventually discovers the solution while fanning himself with the deciphered text. He realizes the message must be read backward to reveal rough Latin. Initially, Axel hides his discovery, fearing Lidenbrock’s intense reaction, but after two days without food, he relents and shares the secret.
Lidenbrock translates the paragraph, which is a 16th-century note by Saknussemm. The alchemist claims to have found a passage to the Earth’s center through the crater of Snæfellsjökull in Iceland. The decoded message reads: “In Sneffels Yokulis craterem kem delibat umbra Scartaris Julii intra calendas descende, audas viator, et terrestre centrum attinges. Kod feci. Arne Saknussemm.” This discovery sets the stage for their extraordinary adventure.
