Description: During the American Civil War, Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) serves as a Confederate cavalryman. However, his commanding officer, Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich), orders him to burn down a hospital. Refusing to comply, Hex is forced to kill his best friend, Jeb, who is Turnbull’s son. After the war, Turnbull and his enforcer, Burke (Michael Fassbender), force Hex to witness the burning of his home with his wife and child inside. Turnbull brands Hex’s face with his initials and leaves him to die. Miraculously, Native Americans revive Jonah, granting him mystical powers, including the ability to temporarily resurrect the dead. When Turnbull is presumed dead in a hotel fire, Hex becomes a bounty hunter, seeking vengeance and scarring half his face to remove the brand.
In 1876, it is revealed that Turnbull has survived. He hijacks a train carrying components of an experimental superweapon, slaughtering guards and passengers. President Grant (Aidan Quinn) deduces that Turnbull is planning a terrorist attack during the American Centennial on the Fourth of July. He instructs Army Lieutenant Grass (Will Arnett) to hire Hex to stop Turnbull.
Hex spends a night with Lilah (Megan Fox), a prostitute with hidden motives. Grass’s men later inform him that Turnbull is still alive. Hex is brought to one of Turnbull’s captured thugs, who dies during interrogation. Using his powers, Hex briefly resurrects the man, who reveals he was recruited by ex-Confederate Colonel Slocum (Tom Wopat), the owner of an illegal deathmatch pavilion in South Carolina.
With the assistance of corrupt Washington aristocrat Adleman Lusk (Wes Bentley), Turnbull steals the remaining components of the weapon invented by Eli Whitney. Hex confronts Slocum in South Carolina, but Slocum refuses to cooperate, sarcastically suggesting Hex ask Jeb about his father’s whereabouts. Hex overpowers Slocum’s men and throws him into the ring, where he is killed by his own fighters. Hex sets the pavilion on fire and saves a dog mistreated by Slocum’s handlers, who then follows him.
In a Gettysburg cemetery, Hex digs up and resurrects Jeb (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). He apologizes for killing him and explains that Turnbull must be stopped to prevent further bloodshed. Before returning to the afterlife, Jeb reveals that his father is at Fort Resurrection.
